Summer 2011

June 14th, 2011

Welcome back to all our NPA friends. Although it’s been a very long and wet spring, the marina has been busy with typical boat prep activities. Hopefully the weather will change and we will enjoy a dry and safe summer boating season.
The “Welcome Back” event was a great gathering of 70 or so members who enjoyed excellent hors d’oeuvres, beverages and comraderie. The sun joined us which is always a treat. The Association welcomed two new members: Sean and Lynne- G Dock and Dave and Sheila- F Dock. Alain and Irene-(new members last season), received their burgee as well.
Speaking of burgees, the Association purchased new ones which members can purchase for $20. See Don Gerlach if you need a replacement. Also have a look up the flagpole and check out the new large NPA burgee.
I would like to extend a special THANKS to Teresa Phillips for handling all of the membership renewals and lists. It’s a great deal of work, a vital task and Teresa does a wonderful job.
The next event will be “Walk the Docks”, 6/25 hosted by Liz and Wendy. This event has a global feel with foods from various parts of the planet. It will be a great way to see other members from across the marina! Get involved, there will be prizes and fun for all. Ask Dock Captains for details.
Other events in the works include the Bloody Mary Breakfast- 7/17, August Golf/BBQ- 8/13 and Septemberfest- 9/10. Stay tuned for more info, get involved, it’s the members who make our Association as vibrant as it is.

Jim and his wife Jeanne have been part of the Navy Point membership for 20 years and endeared themselves to all who have known them. Jim was best known for his quick wit and generous spirit. Some corrected history, courtesy of Andy McPherson . . .

“History – his first TACO was a Pearson 30 that I had owned and was in our charter fleet. It was Marie Burke that christened the boat TACO. It is
now the boat that Mike and Kathy Senf own and have sailed since Bob traded it on the Island Packet.”

It is with great sorrow that I pass this news on to all of you. Bob Schlicting passed away on January 13th.

For those of you who knew “The Commodore” and his family, you will no doubt remember what a good person he was and how much he contributed to Navy Point in the early years (80’s into early 2000’s). For those of you who do not know how he got that nickname, ask me sometime – it makes for a GREAT story – as does the nickname he affectionately used for his lovely wife.

Bob had two sailboats – both named “Taco” – as I remember, one was a Catalina 30 (or possibly a C&C) and the other, which he unfortunately was not able to stay well enough to truly enjoy, was an Island Packet.

Burt, Teresa, Don, and Mary, would you please post this and the attached obituary to the entire Association so that those who knew him might be advised of his crossing the bar? Also, if someone would forward a copy of this to Marie Burke and the Germains, it would be appreciated, as neither of them use email anymore.

Thanks,

Wes
